We cancelled Waimalu-Aiea on Friday and decided to get the permit for Poamoho. With rain in the forecast, we rolled the dice and decided to go to Poamoho anyway. It was apparent that early in the morning, it was going to be a rainy day. We felt that instead of going to the summit, we would explore the stream and get to the waterfall.
Only Proo knew where the waterfall was, but she went 5 years ago. Joining the hike today was Proo, E, Ja, Shell and I. We got to E's house about 8:15am and jumped into E's 4x4 so that he could drive us to Poamoho. The drive was a bit tough on E's truck since there were a lot of mud puddles and the road was slick. We got to the trailhead at about 9am.
The hike to the junction was about 45 minutes. We made the left on a spur ridge down a swath. It took us about 20 minutes to get where Proo thought the turn off was. However, she didn't feel that this was the correct turn off, so we went back. Ja was over it already at this point as it started to rain heavily. When we backtracked we continued on the ridge and took another turn off, but again it was the wrong turn off.
Ja was really over it now. The weather didn't improve, it got worse. We decided to go back up the hill and exit Poamoho. To make the trip worthwhile, I took some pictures of plants I thought were native. The best part of the hike was the post hike meal at Shige's. Their food is so good. I got my usual small saimen, cheeseburger and BBQ stick. This becomes a storied hike as we must find the elusive waterfall.
