Huʻahuʻakō

Huʻahuʻakō

This plant can be seen on Kauai and Oahu's Southern Waianae range. It grow fairly easily in restoration areas, but not too common in the wild. I have to say that with caution as a lot of the Southern Waianae Range is off limits to the public. The leaves are big and triangular shaped.

Background Information

The Huʻahuʻakō is an endemic species of plant in the buckwheat family. According the website Native Plants Hawaii, it likes shady places. I'm not sure what the Hawaiians used this plant for as my research didn't come up with much information.

Huʻahuʻakō

The scientific name is called rumex albescens . There are two other endemic species of rumex, one is on the Big Island. The flowers appear to sprawl from a branched stem.
