pu'uka'a

Pu'uka'a is a unique grass. There are a lot of sedges in Hawaii, but this one is native and endangered. It is said to grow in ponds near the ocean. I have never seen a plant in the wild especially on Oahu where it is very rare. There is mention of it at Alan Davis, but I've comb through that area multiple times even during the rainy season and haven't come across it.

Background Information

Pu'uka'a is the in cyperus family. It is endemic to Hawaii. It is similar to many alien grasses and I am always hopeful to find Pu'uka'a in the wild, but to no avail.

Pu'uka'a

This species is called cyperus trachysanthos. I saw it in cultivation at Wailea Point on Maui. Such a basic plant is rare in the wild.
