maua

Maua - I've only seen Maua in the Koko Crater Botanical Gardens. I haven't seen it flower, so honestly I just see a plant with leaves. There is nothing I can tell that makes it stand out. However, if it is flowering the flowers are said to be showy.

Background Information

There are two endemic species of Maua. It occurs on all the main Hawaiian islands. The plant is called A'e in Maui. The location of these plants is in the upper native forest. However, I haven't come across any or haven't noticed it while hiking. Hawaiians used the wood for poi pounding boards.

Maua

The scientific name is Xylosma hawaiiense . The common name is the Hawaiian Bushholly. The tree can grow up to 50 feet, but more like 15, at least that is what I saw. The bloom period is sometime in the summer months.
