Kuluʻī

Kuluʻī is a plant that doesn't look to difficult to identify. The leaves are a light green and smooth. However, I don't see this plant in the wild and would have a hard time identifying it. It is however label in botanical gardens. The flowers do spike similar to 'ahinahina. What is interesting was in Ancient Hawaii, Hawaiians would light parts of the plant throw it over the cliff. I'm not sure why maybe to signal something??? I thought that description was interesting. The scientific name is Nototrichium sandwicense.
