ʻIe'ie

ʻIe'ie looks palm like similar to hala, but it isn't. It occurs all over the Oahu in the native forest and maybe one of the first plants you see in the native forest. It can even grow in the disturbed forest as well.

Background Information

ʻIe'ie is an indigenous plant in the screw pine family. It seems to be spirally arranged. It does not always grow erect and sometimes sideways. It produces this large orange fruit that smells great. The plant was used a lot in Ancient Hawaii. Hawaiians used the plant for cordage, baskets, fish trabs, baskets, and even made in to helmets. There is only 1 indigenous species called freycinetia arborea.
