kalia

Kalia is a tree common in the Koolau native forest. You'll come across it on many state trails. The way I can identify it that the stems kinda hang and the leaves are scallop edged. It is a different plant than 'others'. You can find it on the KST between Kulepeamoa and Pu'u O Kona.

Background Information

There is only one endemic species of Kalia. It is found only on the islands of Kauai and Oahu and is part of the elaeocarpus family. Ancient Hawaiians used the plant as a black or blue dye. Also, famous botanist J.F. Rock mentions that Hawaiians used the plant as cordage, thatching rods, and rafters. Today it is used as an ornamental plant.

Kalia

The tree can grow up to 30 feet tall, although I've only seen it at about 15 feet tall on trails. The petioles (that part that connects the leaf to the stem) is a pale green to orange color.
