Ālula

Ālula - When I went to Limahuli Gardens on Kauai, this plant got me thinking about native plants. When you read the story on one of those informational signs, the Ālula is lucky it survived. Makes you wonder how many people buss their ass to make sure these plants survive extinction? The Ālula is doing well in cultivation, so well that its a very popular plant.

Background Information

There are two endemic species of Ālula. Both species are on Kauai. I think one produces a yellow flower and one produces a white flower. The insignis species produces yellow and the rockii species produces the white. It is part of the bellflower family, but not considered a cyanea. The flowers it produces this amazing fragrant smell. It really smells amazing.

Ālula

The plant is also named ‘Olulu. According to multiple sources, there is only 1 plant left in the wild on the Na Pali Cliffs of Kauai.
