The Jewel Orchid usually occurs in the wet and mesic native forest. I've never actually any of these plants while hiking. All these photos were taken off the facebook page Native Flora and Fauna of Hawaii. I recommend to go there to find some cool Native Hawaiian Plants.
Background Information
There are 3 endemic species of the Hawaiian Jewel Orchid. There are three different scientific names:
Anoectochilus sandvicensis known as Honohono or Hawaiian Jewel Orchid
Liparis hawaiiensis known as 'awapuhi a Kanaloa which translates to Ginger of Kanaloa
peristylus holochila known as the Hawaiian Bog Orchid, [Critically Endangered, less than 50 plants]
Most of these occur in the wet areas and most likely at the bogs.
In 2025, J who helps with the conservation of Native Hawaiian Plants dm me this photo. This is also on the facebook book page Native Flora and Fauna of Hawaii.
This is also known as the Hawaiian Jewel Orchid. Although it is hard to find, it is the most common to find out of the three Native Hawaiian Orchids. It is a small plant around 6 inches in height.
This one was also from the Native Flora and Fauna of Hawaii. This one is known as the Ginger of Kanaloa 'Awapuhi o Kanaloa. This one looks for like a traditional orchid. I haven't seen much of these in social media post. I believe they are hard to find. These occur on all major Hawaiian Islands.
