neleau

Neleau are small trees that can grow in disturbed places. I haven't seen this tree in the wild before, but I'm sure it's there somewhere, I just haven't noticed it.

Background

The only native plant in the sumac family. The sumac family includes mangoes and cashews. Neleau occurs on all the main islands, but not much on Oahu. The only places is Moanalua and Nuuanu Valleys and I haven't really noticed it. In Ancient Hawaii, Hawaiians used the tree for calabashes (water containers).

Neleau

Leaves are pinnately compounded and kinda long 10cm in length. The flowers are a sight to behold and occurs in the fall in early November. I haven't personally seen it, but have it on my to do list.
