With rain in the forecast, we decided to hike the lesser known Ka'au Crater Right Fork. This is also known as the East Honolulu Waterfalls. Only The Judge and Proo have done this hike before, so most of us didn't know what to expect.
The Judge invited RC, he only told us the day of, so we were surprised, but it made sense since RC has scouted it and has taken a number of groups up. The Judge felt sick when he woke up, so he bailed in the morning. We were trying to figure out if we would like to do the back up. In the end it was on towards Palolo to do the East Honolulu Waterfalls.
Joining the hike today would be RC, E, Prooe, Burs and RC friend Matthew. We started around 7:15am. The hike to the first waterfall was slow, about 1 1/2 hours. We took a break there, and then headed up to the second waterfall. It was really windy today. It was cold AF.
Going up to the third waterfall was quick and we quickly took the right fork and headed up stream. The series of waterfalls started. There were some small ones, but eventually we hit a 15 footer. RC free climbed and dropped the webbing down for us.
Waterfall after waterfall, it got colder and colder. Adrenaline hit, it was good climbing. I remember on one of the falls, we hit a multi-tier one and it topped out at an infinity pool. That was cool!
We went up some short waterfalls and some tall ones. A few needed webbing. It took us about 4 hours to get to the summit a.k.a. Lanipo Gap. It was so windy, like 50 mph winds. It was so cold as well. I put my poncho over my shirt and put my jacket over my poncho for warmth. It didn't rain too much. I was pleasantly surprised.
The crossover was short, about 25 minutes until we hit the top of Ka'au Crater. Going down would be another 2 hours. We chose to go down the crater rim and exit through the bailout that led to the valley. We finished the hike at about 3:30pm.
Burs had to go. The post hike meal was at Pioneer Saloon. Sounds like a cowboy bar, but they serve a lot of local favorites. I was still cold. To top it all off we ate ice cream at Banan. That made me colder.
